About Us
BRIEF HISTORY OF NEW ZERO
The lack
of well-developed art infrastructure in Myanmar, such as no art museums,
no curators, no government support, no foundations, and up to date
information created the independent minds into the visual artists in
Myanmar. The artists were challenged by internationalism and were
demanded neither by the globalization of art nor by the development of
life style or of the tourism. This moment creates the urgent need for
private initiatives. After 2000, the art society of Myanmar became
flexible and quite developed compared to the past eras. Very few of
Myanmar artists started to have a certain standard in international art
sences, because of the some foreign curators or of their individually
and independently attempts.New Zero has been on its trend of promoting
Myanmar lively art sence, especially on Modern and New Art during the
harder period of 1990s.
In 1990, Aye Ko, a young modern artist organized Modern Art 90
exhibition in the leading role in Myanmar. It was one of the historical
modern art movements in Myanmar art history. In 2000, Modern art 90
transformed and rebuilt as New Zero Art Group. Being an art group of
promoting modern and new media art, the organization has very activated
with its regular visual, performance and new art activities including
exhibitions at various venues but also at foreign cultural centers such
like Alliance Francis in Myanmar and American Centre, yearly or monthly.
The activities were running with artists own budget during early time.
In 2002, the group organized a project named Ayeyarwady Art Assembly
collaborated with IFIMA (international Forum for Intermedia Art)
organized by Jayko. That collaborative project included International
Symposium and Open Academy on Collaboration, Networking and
Resource-sharing within June 2002. Prince Claus Fund had been supported
that project.
We, the New Zero also hosted NIPAF-Myanmar Performance art exchange
organized by NIPAF director, Seiji Shimoda for twice in 2001, 2005 and
in 2009. We found that there is not many spaces for Modern and New media
art works in Yangon, we decided to get running own venue for our
activities. Early of 2008, we rent an apartment as New Zero Art Space
and started exhibiting for modern and new art. The New Zero member
artists gathered their own fund to rent that apartment by selling out
their paintings in cheaper prices at New Zero Donation show. In 2009, we
got another space for New Zero Studio including a small library,
documentary centre and a room for the residency artist. Besides, art
classes are running at this studio yearly. Seminar, workshop and artist
talk and presentation occupied at New Zero art space. In January 2009,
we exhibited Asean contemporary art exchange, seminar and workshop with
13 artists from nine countries, 30 artists from Myanmar, sponsored by
Prince Claus Fund. After two years later, in the moment, our art concern
developed into an international network as much as we expected.
Reconsidering the weaks and strengths of our art organization, we found
that we have to effort more and more in order to promote Myanmar
contemporary art of its very beginning commenting and reacting the
current situations in different perspective. So, now, empowering
ourselves, we are trying to educate art, to make specific researches
concern with Myanmar art through social oriented concepts.
CURRENT
MISSIONS
In
order to promote emerging and not-establish Myanmar modern and
contemporary artists, we
will give the art space free for their exhibitions.
In order to educate art among youths, we regularly arrange and host
several seminars, workshops
and discussions by foreign and local artists.
In order to widen network and collaboration with South East Asia,
Asia, Europe, America and Latin
America countries, we would like to organize art exchange programs that
introduce these artists
to Myanmar art scene.
We have the idea to perform public art programs such as art programs
with the persons in
HIV/AIDS and art programs with orphans in Myanmar since last years; we
could not do anything
about them. Therefore, we aim to perform this project soon in the future.
