Aung Myint was born in Yangon in 1946. He lived in Hintada in delta
region in his childhood. In 1963 he came back to Yangon meanwhile he
passed the matriculation standard in the same year and joined the
Rangoon University. He got the bachelor degree in Psychology in 1968.
Since 1970, in the middle of Myanmar Modern age, he participated
subsequently in the modern art movements with his friends such as San
Myint, Aung Aung Taik and Khin One. His first group show was at Alliance
Francis in 1971. At that period, he mainly painted Cubism. After 1980,
he started interested in Abstract Expression and was recognized as the
solid AbEx on Myanmar art in the period of 1980-1990. In 1989, he
founded Inya gallery, which was the first Myanmar Modern art gallery
together with San Minn, Kyi Myint Saw, Aung Kyaw Moe, and Teeto. The
Inya gallery is still alive and it developed and promoted new generation
of Myanmar Modern art. Since 1990, the art movements he activated became
very important movements of Myanmar conceptual art as well. In 1996, he
made an exhibition with his conceptual artworks at Judson Hall, and such
artworks as Egoist, an installation and Life performance became very
famous. However, after 1996, he gave all the isms away, which he
accepted and worked with for over ten years. He decreases his automatism
strokes, colors and instead of these, he replaced with traditional line
drawing. Later, he only used black and white colors, as he was afraid of
colors. After such kind of artistic self-alternation, he made a series
symbolizing the form of Mother and child with only one single line on
the paper. Homage to Mother, a painting of the Mother and child
series, awarded at Asean art exhibition in 2002. And, this series was
defined as his masterpiece, which has totally no relevance with western
and eastern techniques of isms. Moreover, he created clay sculptors,
ceramics sculptors, wood sculptors and sand sculptors. He has already
exhibited over sixty local and international art shows. He made
performance art works in Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia,
Vietnam, Macau, Cambodia, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Japan, Netherlands, London,
Germany, Finland and the USA.
